Mudroom

Our new home was supposed to come with a closet. I like closets and all, but I also know kids. Kids don't use closets. Kids are all about getting it done and moving on to the next, more fun thing. So when they come home from school, the last thing they want to do is go through the multi-step process of putting away their backpack and coat. With a closet, you have to :

1) Open the door.
2) Reach up and take a hanger off of the rod. (If you're tall enough)
3) Hang your coat on the hanger.
4) Reach up and hang the clothed hanger on the rod. (Again, if you're tall enough)
5) Close the door.

Five steps, assuming that you didn't knock 3 other coats off of THEIR hangers somewhere in the process.

So, I decided to simplify things by telling the builder not to bother putting the closet in.

Instead, I had a carpenter build me a mudroom. I absolutely love it! I just wish I had done it sooner!
I also wish my kids could work on:

1) Hang your coat on the hook.

  1. You are so right, too many steps is always a bad idea with kids. I love what you did, I can't wait to come and check it out. Cute post about your nephew too, looks like good genes run in your family.....8 kids??? W O W!

  4. I'm so jealous! My kids come home and the backpacks and shoes go flying every which way. The next morning, inevitably Bradley can only find one shoe and every day we do it all again. Whew! I'm so ready for SUMMMER!!!! And guess what...it's here! :-DDDD
    Your mudroom is GORGEOUS Lydia!

  6. You see, I'm going to have to tell Scott to read this post. I have been trying to convince him to let me take the door off the closet because I'm sure I can come up with something better, like that. Too many steps. In the winter that is great for coats and backpacks and in the summer, it's great for wet towels and flip flops. Perfect!!
